Resentment Feels Like Power but Keeps You Trapped | March 2025 Friday's Devotional | In Pursuit of Forgiveness and Compassion

Friday's Devotional Prayer for March

Heavenly Father,

You are the source
of all compassion and grace.

Teach me to forgive
as You have forgiven me.

Soften my heart,
remove the weight of resentment,
and fill me with Your peace.

Let me extend grace
to those who have wronged me,
not by my own strength,
but through the love of Christ
that dwells within me.

In Jesus' name, Our Lord and Saviour, Amen.

Friday's Devotional for March

As the season of Lent deepens and the world around us transitions from winter’s chill to the budding promise of spring, we are reminded of renewal—not just of the earth but of the soul. The night sky, dotted with constellations that have guided travelers for centuries, mirrors the guiding light of Our Lord and Saviour, who calls us toward forgiveness and compassion. The vast expanse above is much like the growth that occurs when we allow forgiveness to take root in our hearts. The journey toward forgiveness is not always easy. Wounds of the past, betrayals, and deep-seated hurt can make extending grace to those who have wronged us difficult. Yet, Our Lord calls us to forgive and do so as an act of divine love, reflecting the compassion He has shown us. When Jesus was crucified, in the agony of His final moments, He uttered, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Even in suffering, He demonstrated the boundless mercy of Our Father, revealing that true forgiveness is not conditional but an expression of divine grace.

Consider someone who has carried the weight of a long-standing grudge against a childhood friend. Years ago, a falling out led to harsh words and broken trust. Though their lives took different paths, the wound lingered beneath the surface. Occasionally, the memory resurfaced, adding to the burden of unresolved bitterness. Only through deep reflection did he realize that it wasn’t his friend’s past actions that kept him bound—his unwillingness to let go. Seeking Our Lord’s strength in prayer, he found the courage to release his resentment. In doing so, he lifted a heavy burden from his heart, opening the door to reconciliation and, perhaps, even the renewal of a friendship if the opportunity arose. This story is a powerful reminder of how forgiveness brings healing and renewal. The Apostle Paul speaks to this truth, urging us, “So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow” (2 Corinthians 2:7). Paul understood that unforgiveness not only affects the offender but also weighs down the one who refuses to let go.

The exchange of forgiveness is central to our relationship with Our Lord and others. As we seek forgiveness for our transgressions, we are called to extend that same mercy to those who have sinned against us. The inability to forgive does not imprison the offender but rather the one who holds onto bitterness, creating a barrier between themselves and the healing Our Lord desires. Forgiveness is not about excusing wrongdoing but about releasing ourselves from the chains of bitterness. When we forgive, we reflect the divine mercy of Our Lord and embrace the peace that follows. Christ’s sacrifice was the ultimate act of forgiveness, and through His example, we learn that to forgive is not merely a suggestion but a necessity for those who seek to walk in His light. Our Lord and Saviour play a crucial role in the forgiveness process, guiding us and giving us the strength to forgive as He forgives.

If there is someone in your life you have struggled to forgive, take a moment to pray for them. Write a letter of reconciliation—do not send it. Acknowledge the hurt and the grace that Our Lord and Saviour offer. Let forgiveness begin in your heart today. The Apostle Paul, in his wisdom, offers a final exhortation that ties together the necessity of compassion and unity: “Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus” (Romans 15:5). To pursue forgiveness is to seek healing, and in that pursuit, we mirror the love of Our Lord and Saviour, who, in His boundless mercy, calls us always toward reconciliation.

Forgiveness and compassion are the keys to healing and renewal. Just as Our Lord and Saviour forgave even those who crucified Him, we are called to release the burdens of resentment and extend grace. The journey toward forgiveness is not one we take alone; Our Father walks with us, guiding us into a life of peace and reconciliation. As we close this devotional, let us remember that just as the stars remain steadfast in the sky, so does our Lord's love endure, calling us always toward healing, compassion, and the freedom found in forgiveness.
