Tuesday's Devotional for November

The winter chill envelops the northern world during our preparation and anticipation for celebrating the foretold coming of Jesus Christ. It fills the air with excitement for those who can find a moment of reflection. December carries a profound sense of clarity and stillness, urging us to pause amid the busyness of life. The clear, starry nights often reveal constellations like Orion, their constancy reminding us of the eternal nature of Our Lord and Creator’s wisdom. In these moments, on nights when the heavens are clear, and the world does its best to slow down, we should remind ourselves of the gift of divine guidance and insight.

Shrouded by a society brimming with distractions and deceptions, the pursuit of wisdom and clarity has never been more vital. The words of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, recorded in the Gospels, offer a roadmap for our journey. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matthew 6:22). These words urge us to focus our spiritual vision on eternal truths—unchanging principles that transcend time and circumstance, reflecting the divine nature of Our Father and Creator. Just as physical clarity of sight allows the body to navigate with certainty, so does spiritual clarity, which enables the soul to discern Our Father’s will and live in alignment with His eternal purpose.

One example of eternal truth is found in Jesus’ teaching about love in the Gospels: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” — Mark 12:31. This truth about love is eternal because it reflects His unchanging nature—He is love (1 John 4:8). The command to love others as ourselves applies universally, regardless of culture, time, or situation. It guides our relationships, decisions, and priorities, emphasizing compassion and selflessness.

Take a person juggling the responsibilities of a demanding career and a growing family. Life is a constant tug-of-war between competing priorities. You may find yourself exhausted, your mind clouded with doubt about whether you are making the right choices. Before beginning work every morning, sit quietly and pray for Our Father’s guidance. Ask for clarity in your tasks and the wisdom to handle your burdens. Over time, you will begin to feel a deep sense of peace. Prayer becomes a source of strength, helping to see challenges not as insurmountable but as opportunities to rely more deeply on Our Lord.

Spends a few moments in quiet reflection, asking for the light of Our Father’s wisdom. Discover a truth central to scripture: clarity and wisdom are not born of human effort alone but are gifts from Our Heavenly Father to those who humbly seek Him.

The Apostle James echoes this sentiment, reassuring believers that wisdom is readily available to those who ask for it. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5). This verse offers hope to anyone feeling lost or uncertain. The wisdom we seek comes not from striving but from surrendering to Our Father’s will. He is a generous giver, eager to illuminate our paths when we turn to Him in trust.

This idea is beautifully reflected in the Septuagint’s words: “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding.” (Proverbs 3:13). Wisdom is not just a tool for practical decision-making; it is a divine treasure, a source of blessing that brings fulfillment and peace. Allow me to repeat that wisdom can bring you fulfillment and peace. The scriptures consistently portray wisdom as more than intellectual knowledge—a relationship with Him, a deep alignment with His purposes.

When we examine the life of Jesus, we see the ultimate example of wisdom and clarity in action. Throughout His ministry, Our Lord and Saviour displayed a profound ability to see through human pretensions and focus on eternal truths. Whether He was addressing the self-righteous Pharisees, comforting the brokenhearted, or guiding His disciples, His actions have always been marked by a divine clarity that stemmed from His unity with Our Father. His wisdom was never self-serving but always aimed at leading others to truth and salvation.

This same clarity is available today if we seek it with humble hearts. True wisdom is described by the Apostle James as “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17). It is a wisdom that transforms not just our decisions but our entire being, shaping us into instruments of peace and love. In contrast to worldly wisdom, which often fosters pride and division, the wisdom of Our Lord creates harmony and draws us closer to Him.

The Advent season invites us to refocus on seeking wisdom and clarity. As we approach the celebration of the coming of Our Lord and Saviour, we reflect on how Jesus, the light of the world, entered history not in grandeur but in humility, bringing with Him the profound gift of divine insight. His arrival was not proclaimed by rulers or the mighty but welcomed by shepherds and wise men—united in their unwavering purpose to seek and honor Him. In this, we see a timeless truth: wisdom is found not in power or prestige but in hearts devoted to pursuing His light.

You are called to emulate this pursuit. Clarity begins with a heart surrendered to Our Father. It requires us to step away from the noise of life and spend time in quiet reflection, seeking His guidance. Start by finding a calm place, setting a specific time, and using a prayer guide or scripture reading plan. As you do so, you will see your life through the lens of eternity, gaining insight into what truly matters.

May we embrace the gift of wisdom and clarity as we go through the Advent season, allowing it to guide our steps and fill our hearts with peace. Let December remind us of Our Lord’s promise to illuminate our paths, leading us ever closer to Him. In His wisdom, we find the answers we seek and the strength and purpose to live as He calls us to. May His light shine brightly in our hearts, drawing us into deeper fellowship with Him.
