Teach us to live with hearts full of gratitude
and minds clothed in humility.

Let us recognize that every good gift comes from You
and that we are called to serve
and honor You through our thankfulness.

Guide us to remember that in all things,
we depend on Your strength and grace.

In Jesus' name, Our Lord and Saviour, Amen.

Thursday's Devotional for November

November is the time of year, with its shorter days and longer nights, we are invited to quiet our minds and consider the blessings that fill our lives. We are also called into remembrance, particularly as Thanksgiving approaches, and with it, a sense of gratitude that seeks to overflow into all areas of our lives. The clear night skies remind us of the vastness of creation and our small yet meaningful place within it—a perspective that invites humility. In this space of wonder and gratitude, we should work toward being drawn nearer to Our Lord, who crafted the heavens and sustains the earth, prompting us to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness.

Embracing gratitude and humility, when nurtured amidst life's trials and joys, aligns us with the love and purpose Our Lord has for us. A heart filled with gratitude acknowledges every blessing, big or small, and recognizes the source of all goodness. Meanwhile, humility softens our hearts, reminding us of our dependence on Our Lord’s mercy and grace, and allowing us to approach Him and others with a genuine spirit. Find it within yourself to embark on a journey through the virtues of gratitude and humility, understanding how they serve as pillars of faith that strengthen your connection to Our Lord.

In the Gospel of Luke, we find a profound illustration of gratitude through the story of the ten lepers healed by Our Lord and Saviour. After calling out to Jesus for mercy, all ten were miraculously cleansed, yet only one returned to express his thanks. The one who returned was a Samaritan, a foreigner often looked down upon by the Jewish community, yet he was the one who recognized the gift he had received. He fell at Jesus’ feet with deep reverence, glorifying Our Lord with a loud voice and giving thanks for his healing. His gratitude was more than mere words; it was an act of humble recognition, an acknowledgment that his newfound wholeness was a blessing bestowed upon him by Our Lord. Jesus’ response highlights the significance of this act of gratitude: “Were there not ten cleansed but where are the nine.” —Luke 17:17. He then tells the Samaritan that his faith has made him well, signaling that gratitude and faith are intertwined.

This story resonates with us on many levels as blessings often surround us, yet the demands and distractions of daily life can lead us to overlook or take these blessings for granted. We are to cultivate gratitude, we should always do our best to acknowledge that everything we have—our health, relationships, and daily provisions—comes from the hand of Our Lord. This acknowledgment brings us closer to Him, allowing us to receive His grace more fully. A grateful heart is not quick to forget the gifts it has received but returns to Our Lord with thanksgiving, just as the Samaritan leper did. In doing so, we honor Our Lord and deepen our connection, finding joy in recognizing His constant presence and provision.

Gratitude, however, is only part of the equation. Humility serves as the foundation upon which thankfulness stands. In Paul's letter to the Philippians, he writes, “Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” —Philippians 2:3-4. This counsel challenges us to adopt a posture of humility in all aspects of our lives, reminding us that true greatness comes not through self-promotion or pride but through service and genuine concern for others. Humility is supposed to keep us grounded, reminding us that we are all equally dependent on the mercy and grace of Our Lord. Humility should remove the barriers of pride and self-reliance, allowing for a spirit of compassion and gratitude.

Humility allows us to see beyond ourselves, enabling us to recognize and appreciate the roles others play in our lives. In this way, humility and gratitude go hand in hand, enriching our relationships and drawing us closer to Our Lord.

The wisdom of Proverbs echoes this principle, stating, “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.” —Proverbs 15:33. This verse reminds us that humility is not a form of weakness but a path to true honor and respect. When we approach life with a humble heart, we are open to learning from Our Lord and others, recognizing that every experience offers growth and spiritual enrichment. Humility is not just a virtue, but a key to unlocking deeper spiritual understanding and connection. Humility teaches us that we are not the sole authors of our destinies; instead, we are guided by His hand and sustained by His love. Through humility, we learn to see our lives in the context of a greater purpose, understanding that our actions have the power to reflect the love and mercy of Our Lord. Which is what separates us from the other living creatures that live with us.

As we reflect on the blessings of life, let us consider how gratitude and humility can transform our spiritual journey. Gratitude reminds us to celebrate the goodness of Our Lord in every moment, fostering a spirit of thanksgiving that lifts our hearts above life’s challenges. Humility, however, grounds us in the truth of our dependence on Our Lord, freeing us from the need to prove ourselves or seek validation from the world. Together, these virtues create a balanced and joyful faith that honors Our Lord and blesses those around us.

Take a moment to express gratitude to someone who has impacted your life positively. Whether through a note, a message, or a small act of kindness, let them know that their presence and actions have not gone unnoticed. Such a gesture is a simple yet profound way to embody gratitude and humility, demonstrating that we recognize the value of others in our lives. By acknowledging the support and kindness we receive, we honor those around us and tangibly reflect our Lord's love.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” —Colossians 3:15. In these words, we are reminded that gratitude is not just an occasional feeling but a steady, guiding force that leads us toward peace. As we pursue lives marked by thankfulness and humility, we align ourselves with the will of Our Lord, discovering a peace that surpasses understanding. Gratitude and humility are, first and foremost, virtues to be practiced during moments of plenty, but also principles to be lived daily, guiding us through all seasons.

The beauty of gratitude and humility lies in their ability to transform your heart, grounding you in the peace of Our Lord and freeing you from the anxieties of self-reliance. As you embrace these virtues, you will find your spirit strengthened, your relationships deepened, and your life enriched with purpose. In your pursuit of gratitude and humility, anchor your soul in the peace that comes only from a heart aligned with Our Lord’s love—a peace that will carry you forward in faith, hope, and joy.
