As the moon casts its gentle light across the November sky, illuminating the quietness of our homes below, we are presented with the perfect time to seek the inner strength that carries us through life's inevitable changes. This time of year invites us to pursue Spiritual Strength—a deep resilience anchored in faith that empowers us to face life's challenges with peace and purpose. It is a quiet but powerful reminder that our spirits, too, need seasons to reflect, regain strength, and renew.
In the teachings of Our Lord and Saviour, we find a call to build our lives upon an unshakable foundation. "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:" He tells us in Matthew 7:24-25, "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock." This image of a house built upon a rock speaks to physical security and the spiritual grounding that can withstand life's storms. Just as a house on a sturdy foundation endures the elements, a spirit rooted in faith remains resilient against the trials of life. In our pursuit of Spiritual Strength, we should make Our Lord our rock and anchor, a source of strength that does not waver.
This principle finds deep resonance in the words of the Psalmist 18:1-2, who sings, "I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust;" Our reliance on Our Lord isn’t something we do passively; it’s an active, loving relationship built on trust. Spiritual strength isn’t something we create on our own—it’s a gift we receive when we choose to trust in Our Lord’s unwavering presence. By making Him our fortress, we admit our need for His help, not as a weakness but as a source of real strength. In times of doubt, when life’s challenges feel overwhelming, this divine support helps us stay steady and robust.
Through prayer and meditation on Our Lord's word, we discovered a reservoir of strength that does not solely rely on our ability to "hold it together." As we place our trust in Our Lord daily, we can feel our spirit renewed. Though the challenges persist, we face them with a new resilience, anchored in the truth that we are not facing them alone. Like the wise man who built his house upon the rock, we can withstand the storms, not because the storms ceased but because our foundation is secure.
An essential truth about spiritual strength is not the absence of difficulty but the presence of divine support that sustains us. When we place our confidence in Our Father, we tap into a strength that transcends our human limitations. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." This strength isn’t about proving ourselves or going it alone; it’s about drawing on Our Lord’s presence, which gives us the energy and resilience to face life’s challenges. Each difficulty becomes a chance to strengthen our connection with Him and feel renewed in a way only faith can provide.
Spiritual strength is available to each of us but requires an active choice. It is important to realize we must build our lives on a foundation of faith. We choose to turn to Our Lord in moments of doubt and struggle rather than relying solely on ourselves. It means prioritizing time spent in prayer, reading scripture, and seeking divine wisdom over the world's temporary distractions. It means cultivating an inner life rooted in faith so that our spirits are prepared to remain steady when the rains descend and the winds blow.
We should often reflect on this pursuit of strength and renewal. We have turned away from Our Father by the encouragement of our society to seek complete self-sufficiency and independence. It has come to a point for many where it feels abnormal or counterintuitive to seek strength outside ourselves. Scripture teaches us that true strength comes not from our abilities but from a life rooted in trust and reliance on Our Lord. You do not have to bear your burdens alone; instead, lay them down before Our Lord, who strengthens us in ways beyond our understanding.
Start by dedicating a specific time each day to meditate on scripture that reinforces strength and renewal. Let this practice become a foundation of faith that sustains you, especially in times of trial. Consider how these words speak to your heart as you read, pray, and reflect. Let them remind you of Our Lord’s promise to be with you always, as your rock and fortress in times of need. Here are some passages to guide you:
- Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereofroar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.”
- Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
- Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
- Isaiah 40:29 – “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”
Let these scriptures become touchstones in your daily life. They will nurture your faith and remind you that Our Lord is always with you, a constant source of strength and renewal.
As we draw this devotional to a close, let us remember the words of 2 Timothy 1:7: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." These words encapsulate the essence of spiritual strength. We do not have to live in fear or be overwhelmed by life's challenges; instead, we are to live with a spirit of strength, love, and soundness from Our Father. We stand on an unshakable foundation, allowing our spirit to face each day confidently.
As you go forth this November, may you find the strength not in your might but in our Lord's eternal and unfailing support. May this month be a season of renewal as you build your life on the rock of faith. When storms arise, may you stand firm, not because of your strength, but because the unmovable One holds you. I pray that each challenge you face becomes a testament to the strength that faith provides, a strength that transforms our lives and hearts, renewing us from the inside out.
