September greets us with the quiet stirrings of autumn. The days begin to shorten, the air cools, and nature seems to embrace a reflective pause. We are invited into a space of stillness and introspection for September's Saturday Devotion. This theme resonates deeply in a world that constantly demands more from us. September carries the subtle changes of seasons, reminding us that just as nature slows to prepare for winter, our hearts must also find moments of rest.
On a particular Saturday in September, the skies will glimpse the waning crescent moon—a celestial symbol of closure and renewal. The moon's cycle is an apt metaphor for our spiritual lives, where we experience moments of fullness and brightness but are also invited into periods of darkness and quiet. During these peaceful moments, we are gently invited to pause and reflect on our walk with Our Lord and Saviour, to soak in His comforting peace, and to rest securely, knowing that His loving presence is with us every step of the way.
"Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
(Matthew 11:28, KJV)
The invitation to rest in Our Lord's presence is clearly articulated in Matthew 11:28. These words are more than just a promise; they are a lifeline for those who feel overwhelmed by the burdens of daily life. Whether it's the weight of work, family obligations, personal struggles, or spiritual fatigue, Our Lord extends an open invitation to find rest in Him. His rest is not just physical, though that is undoubtedly part of it, but it is also a deep, soulful rest that rejuvenates our spirits and refreshes our hearts. This promise of rest is a soothing reminder, offering comfort and peace amid life’s challenges.
Reflecting on this passage, it becomes clear that rest is not simply the absence of activity. Instead, it is an active engagement with our faith—a purposeful turning of our hearts toward God. Amid the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we can easily forget to pause and reflect, but in these moments of reflection, we experience the peace that Our Lord and Creator offer. Proper rest begins when we relinquish control, surrendering our worries and concerns to Him. When we surrender, we discover true peace. This act of letting go opens the door to reflection, encouraging us to intentionally seek rest in the Lord's presence, where we can be renewed and restored.
The concept of rest is not unique to the New Testament. We see it woven throughout the Bible, including in the Old Testament, where God promises His presence to His people. In Exodus 33:14, the Lord tells Moses, "And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest." This assurance from Our Lord and Creator is as relevant today as it was then. As He guided the Israelites through the wilderness, providing for their every need, so too does He guide us through the wilderness of our own lives. In His presence, we are sustained, and in His presence, we find rest.
Imagine, for a moment, a young woman deeply committed to her family, career, and church. She strives to be everything to everyone but feels increasingly worn out. Each day feels like a marathon, with little time to rest or reflect. One evening, she sits by her window, watching the sunset behind the mountains. In the stillness of that moment, she remembers the words of Our Lord from Matthew 11:28: "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Closing her eyes, she begins to pray, asking for rest—not just for her body, but for her soul.
She feels an overwhelming sense of peace in that quiet moment of prayer. She realizes that while her responsibilities are essential, she cannot carry them alone. She remembers that Our Lord invites her to bring her burdens to Him, to rest in His presence, and to trust in His provision. Though her circumstances remain the same, her heart feels lighter, and her spirit is renewed. This moment of reflection brings her the calm she desperately needs, reminding her that she is not alone in her journey.
This story highlights a fundamental principle found throughout scripture: rest is not merely a physical need but also a vital spiritual practice. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded to "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." When we approach Our Lord with gratitude, even in the midst of chaos, He offers us peace that surpasses all understanding. This peace protects our hearts and minds, empowering us to face challenges with fresh strength and calm. Gratitude unlocks the path to peace and contentment in the Lord’s presence.
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
(John 14:27, KJV)
As we turn our thoughts to the theme of rest, let us meditate on John's powerful words. Our Lord's peace is far beyond anything this world can provide. It is a deep, enduring peace that anchors our souls, holding us steady even in life’s fiercest storms. When we welcome this divine peace, our fear and worry soften their hold on us. We can rest securely, knowing that Our Lord holds us in His loving hands, guiding and protecting us through every challenge.
The pursuit of rest can, at times, feel countercultural. We are often encouraged to do more, be more, and achieve more, but Our Lord invites us to a different rhythm. He invites us to pause, reflect, and rest in His presence. This rest is not about escaping life's responsibilities but finding peace. It is about trusting that Our Lord and Creator are in control and that He will provide for our every need.
How can we make rest a regular part of our daily lives? One effective way is to carve out moments for quiet reflection. Amid the noise and demands of life, creating time to be still allows us to reconnect with Our Lord and find peace. As Psalm 62:1 says, “Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.” This verse reminds us that proper rest for the body and soul comes from seeking Him.
Set aside a few minutes each day to be still, reflect on His Word, and pray for His peace. Consider verses like Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Meditate on this promise and let your worries fade as you focus on His presence. Ask Our Lord to lift your burdens and refresh your spirit in these quiet moments.
In these times of reflection, you may also find guidance in Exodus 33:14, where the Lord says, “And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” By intentionally seeking His presence each day, you will begin to experience the deep rest and renewal that only He can offer. As you make this a regular practice, the peace and rest of Our Lord will begin to transform your heart and strengthen your spirit.
Another practical step is to live each day with a heart full of gratitude. When we shift our focus to the blessings we have, our outlook changes from one of scarcity to one of abundance. As Psalm 100:4 (KJV) reminds us, “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” Gratitude draws us closer to Our Lord, helping us recognize His presence in every aspect of our lives.
Living with gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring challenges, but it allows us to see beyond them to the more excellent plan Our Lord has for us. As Colossians 3:15 (KJV) says, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” When we embrace gratitude, we invite His peace to govern our hearts, no matter the circumstances.
Gratitude helps us trust that Our Lord is always at work, even in trials. James 1:17 (KJV) reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” By focusing on His goodness, we open the door to peace and faith, knowing He is guiding everything for our ultimate good.
Lastly, let us remember the value of community. Rest and comfort are often found in the company of those who uplift and support us. Contact a trusted friend or family member, and don’t hesitate to share your burdens. Doing so opens the door for God’s love to work through others, offering you peace and encouragement in ways you may not have anticipated.
Remember that reflection and rest are not just suggestions but essential components of a vibrant spiritual life. Our Lord and Creator invites us into His presence, where we can lay down our burdens and receive His peace. In this space of introspective calm, we find the strength to continue on our journey, renewed and refreshed in His love.
Take time this week to pause, reflect, and rest in the presence of Our Lord. Let His peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. And as you go forth, may you carry His peace with you, sharing it with those around you.
